Stressful work days are an inescapable reality for most of us. Relaxing can be a futile effort once you get home. Thankfully, modern lifestyle gurus and outlets that range from recreation to medicine offer us various ways to get that burden off our shoulders. If you need the most effective method to reach nirvana, here are six ways to relax after a stressful day at work.

1. Get drenched

There’s nothing like hot water to wash your worries off. A steaming hot shower is both a form of massage and meditation that can help you get rid of all the stress that has accumulated in your muscles throughout the day. If you have enough time, you can fill up your bathtub with water and add some bath salts into the mix. Light a few scented candles and put on your favorite Brian Eno playlist, and you are set for some quality relax-time.

2. Listen to music

As far as music goes, it’s been proven as one of the best stress-relievers and mood-boosters out there. Just put on your favorite musician or a playlist of your favorite musicians and dance your butt off for an hour or two. If you need to prepare dinner, your favorite music can be a fantastic addition to this Zen activity. Just be careful not to play it too loud.

3. Stretch

Exercise works for some people, but if you are not an athletic type, it can build up even more stress in your system. Stretching is the best next thing you can do. While you are at the office, your muscles tend to cramp up and go completely stiff. If your job requires a lot of sitting by the computer, this is bound to be a problem. Practicing yoga at home is a godsend to many stressed out employees.

4.  Read a book

There’s nothing better after a day filled with tension and worries than immersing yourself into the world of fantasy. Your book of choice doesn’t have to be of a particular genre, the most important thing is the quality. How immersed into the life of the characters on the page are you? Every good book is filled with spiritually enriching material that can relax you, elevate your spirit or downright excite you. Reading is also an activity that proves to be a lot more relaxing than watching TV.

5. Alternative methods

Of course, some people respond really well to alternative methods of relaxing. Some employees will rely on various herbal teas. Mixtures that include chamomile, peppermint and marigold are some of the most popular ones, but they’re mostly just teas rich in antioxidants that emit pleasant smells.

Valerian root is widely used both in the form of tea and capsules combined with other plants to create a potent concoction for sleep and relaxation. Shango also offers products that are sold in dried-up and oil form that have helped a lot of highly-stressed employees sleep at night. It’s perfectly understandable that some people are apprehensive about this; however, the products such as these go through extensive monitoring and regulations before they hit the shelves.

6. Into the green

All the best things come directly from nature. This also goes for methods of relaxation after work. If you finish your day in the office before dusk, go on a stroll to the closest park and enjoy watching some opulent green scenery. If you have a few hours off during the day, go to the nearby national park or forest and enjoy some peaceful time among the birds and green treetops. If you have a friend who’s willing to go with you, this can turn into a truly enriching daily activity. The green color is nature’s favorite hue when it comes to de-stressing your eyes and it really works.  

There is no shame in admitting you need assistance to relax after a hard day at work. After all, we live in a world in which everything is too fast and too hectic for a normal person to follow. In order to circumvent stress, you have to take the first step towards finding your own way to relax.
